On Friday 25th February 2022, 13 Ukrainian soldiers make a defiant last stand against the approaching Russian navy.

The 13 guards stationed on the remote Zmiinyi (Snake) Island were informed by a Russian warship via loudspeaker that they should surrender or “be hit with a bomb strike”. “Russian warship, go fuck yourself,” was their leader’s reply.

My grandparents were Ukrainian and they were stoical people. I too served in the military but I wonder whether I too would have shown the same courage and dogged determination that those soldiers defending Snake Island showed.
